Syracuse, NY: Before we left this morning we met Bobby McMahon for breakfast. He lived next door to us when we were kids. It was so great seeing him. He has a great, dry sense of humor which I never realized back in my teenage years. But in those days he was putting worms down my back and tying me up and throwing me on the local recluse’s front porch. Wish we could have stayed longer, but our water pump is now acting up. And three months worth of mail is awaiting us. We left at 11:30, took turns driving, and arrived in Westfield, NY (just a couple of miles from the PA line) at 4:00. Tomorrow we drive to Richland, IN, and will be our longest driving day. At least the weather has improved.

Syracuse, NY: Cloudy but warm this morning. Went to the club house at the Green Lakes golf course for breakfast. We were the only ones in the restaurant. Got there just before they stopped serving breakfast. After that we drove to North Syracuse. Couldn’t find my old high school. Drove by our old house and the neighborhood didn’t look as bad as I thought it would. The Roots still live across the road. Herman was out and I stopped and talked with him. Didn’t think he knew who I was, but he remembered when my father planted the two maple trees in the front yard. Drove around some more and then called Jim McMahon who used to live next door to us as kids. We ended up going over to their house in Baldwinsville. Spent the whole afternoon there blabbing with Jim and Carol. Had a great time. Then we went to Lock 24 Restaurant for dinner. On our way back to the campground at Green Lakes there was a huge rainbow over the city. Sky threatening to the west, clearing behind us. Would have loved to do some biking on the Erie Canal bike path, but no time and bad weather. We start the drive home tomorrow morning (sigh).

Syracuse, NY: Left at 10:00 and arrived at Green Lakes State Park by 3:45. I used to take swimming lessons at this park as a kid and also life saving lessons as a teen. The campground is great and the Erie Canal bike path is just across the street from the park entrance. Great place! We were able to get in touch with LaDon who I used to work with at GE and we had drinks at the golf course club house. Beautiful view from the veranda. Was great reminiscing with her.

Camp Quinn
Sun, Sept 2
Camp Quinn: Really foggy this morning. But cleared to a beautiful day. Left around 10:30. Arrived at Michele & Norman’s around 1:00. Got set up and checked out the new animals. Louie is so cute. And Clohe is also. Taz was glad to see us (I think). We went to the Six's for dinner.
Sat, Sept 1
Schroon Lake: Over to Sandy and Dan’s this morning at about 11:00 and they had been waiting for us so we could leave for breakfast. Went to a quite place called Suzie Q’s. A really nice, fairly new log building. We ate out on the deck. Then we drove over to see the gift shop at some cave place and Sandy bought a bracelet. Place is nice but mostly for kids. Dan was going to buy a yearly pass for his grandkids. Then we drove over to some cute little town and had fried dough. The place was called Little Nony’s and was as cute as could be. And the fried dough was the best. Then back to Sandy and Dan’s and we played Spades until about 10:00 and we headed back to the campground. The campground is just across the lake from their place but it was much warmer on our side of the lake last night—for some reason. Read for a while and then to bed. We had a fun two days with them. Tomorrow we leave for Michele and Norman’s.

Schroon Lake: Went to the Adirondack General Store for breakfast this morning. Had a hard time finding our way to the east shore of the lake. Mike finally stopped and asked someone. The general store is cute, has lots of cute stuff in there to buy. It’s more of a gift shop than a store. And the restaurant has only 3 tables. But while you wait you can browse around. Breakfast was okay. After that we drove into The Lodges to see if we could find Sandy and Dan’s place…which we did. Drove into Schroon Lake Village and browsed around and picked up a couple of things at the grocery store. Took that back to the Starship and then we headed over to Sandy and Dan’s. A really nice place. They showed us around and later we went out for dinner to The Place. Good food. Back to their place and played Spades until about midnight and we headed back.

Planned to leave this morning by 10:00 but got talking to some people and didn’t leave until 11:00. Arrived at Eagle Point by 4:00. Not a very good campground. New York State parks are not very good—especially in the Adirondacks. We’ll go commercial if we ever come back here. After getting set up we drove into the little town of Adirondack and then stopped at the Black Bear restaurant in Pottersville for dinner. After that we drove to Schroon Lake village and then back to campground. At least the water faucet is across the road and we can reach with our hose to fill our water tank. Cloudy and rainy most of the way over here. Drove past a couple of beautiful lakes on Rt. 74—Eagle Lake and Paradox Lake. Can’t believe this campground closes after Labor Day weekend.
