Slept in a little this morning. A grey, drizzly morning. After we showered and dressed and got going, we went to the grocery store and picked up a few things. You can’t buy wine in grocery stores—only in state liquor stores. So we had to go into Lewisburg old town. It was so neat. Built in the early 1800s, all of the homes and stores were in pristine condition. And right on the Susquehanna River. If we hadn’t had to go to the state liquor store we never would have seen it. Bob and Eileen came over around 3:00 and we had some wine and cheese. Left for dinner at 5:30. Left them around 9:30 and came back. We leave tomorrow for Newburg, NY. Can’t believe we’ll be in “The City” day after tomorrow. Well, it was a bear I heard last night. Mike went to the restroom late in the evening and a bear was tryng to get into the dumpster just across from the restroom. I'm sure there are a lot of them around here.

Left Mercer at 10:00. Western Pennsylvania is beautiful, scenic jungle—lush, hilly and heavily forested. We crossed two beautiful rivers—the Allegheny and the Clarion…both in beautiful, deep valleys. We’re staying at a KOA in central Pennsylvania so we can get together with a friend of Mike’s. Arrived here at 3:00 and were set up by 3:30. Cooler today—upper 70s, but cloudy and humid. Started sprinkling as we were setting up. We took Interstate 80 coming across. Roads good except for one 10-mile stretch. Heard a lot of banging around late in the evening. Human or bear?

Left Richmond, IN, at 8:38 ET. Stopped and had breakfast at Sunbury, OH. Then Mike started driving. Except for a 20-mile stretch around Akron, OH, the roads are very good through Ohio. But that 20-mile stretch was very rough on the truck and the fifth wheel. We arrived at the KOA in Mercer, PA, at about 3:00. Got set up and I took a shower. Have cable TV so I’m sure we’ll be watching TV tonight. Left-overs for dinner. Pretty warm--88.

Left St. Louis this morning at 9:00 a.m. Stopped at Effingham, IL, for breakfast. Then continued to Terre Haute, IN, and Mike started driving. Interstate 70 through Indiana is horrible. There were a few areas in Indianapolis that were ok and there’s a lot of construction through Indianapolis, but the rest is horrible. We will be glad to see Indiana in our rear-view mirror. Arrived at the KOA in Richmond, IN, at 4:00. Pretty warm—88.

Up this morning and started putting things together to take home. Leaving here around 11:00. Should be home by 2:00. It’s a beautiful, sunny day.

A cloudy, drizzily morning. We left Tupelo around 10:30 and by the time we got to Memphis the clouds cleared away and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Driving Rt. 78 from Birmingham took us through some really pretty areas in rural Alabama and Mississippi. And it was a good road except for the areas where it’s not yet finished—even though it’s a limited access highway. And we approached Memphis from a totally different direction than I’m used to. We went through Olive Branch, Mississippi, which is the prettiest little town. After getting through Memphis we stopped at a rest area and I started driving. Had dinner and gassed up at a Flying J south of Sikeston. Pulled into the KOA in Perryville at 6:00. Long day.

Got an early start this morning. Left at 8:45. Of course, we didn’t even unhook from the truck, so it didn’t take long to get going. I drove through Montgomery and we stopped at Clanton, AL, to eat. Then Mike drove. We didn’t get to Tupelo until about 3:45. We left Rt. 26 and came over on Rt. 78 through rural Alabama. Really beautiful drive. After setting up in Tupelo, turned on the TV and the Cardinals are playing their last pre-season game in Memphis. Tomorrow is the home opener in St. Louis.

Would love to check out the boyhood home of Elvis and other historic things in the area, but we didn’t want to unhook the truck so we can get out early again. Driving to Blytheville, AR, tomorrow.
