Another beautiful, sunny day—a little on the cool side. Spent most of the morning backing up the files on the laptop. Then we headed out for breakfast/lunch at the Canaan family restaurant—the only restaurant in town. The food was very good and they have an extensive menu. After eating we went to Lake George Regional Park which is only a couple of miles from the campground. Lake George is a beautiful little lake that was formed over 10,000 years ago by glaciation. There were some kids swimming (it was only about 68 degrees out) but they said the water wasn’t cold. I checked it out and it actually wasn’t bad. We went for a hike which was only a little over two miles, but pretty strenuous. Started out on the lake shore which was full of rocks/boulders and very hard going (saw a snake sunning itself) and then connected with another trail that went straight up hill—no switchbacks. Then connected with another trail which went through a hemlock forest which was really beautiful. Saw an owl there that wasn’t very happy with our presence. Came back and sat outside and read for a while. I’m just finishing a book about Joshua Slocum who was the first person to circumnavigate the globe solo in a 36-foot sloop, the Spray. What an exciting story. He started in 1895 and finished in 1898.
