Hazy View of Mountains

We left Moose River this morning at 11:00 and were back at Canaan by 1:30 or so. Decided to return here because we have full cable, Internet access, and a good phone signal. Now we just need to regroup and rearrange our trip. Guess we’ll stay here until July 7th because it would be hard to find something over the holiday. Then we have a reservation at Orchard Beach. Moved up our Acadia reservation up a month. So, I guess it’s working out okay. Really hot today—low 90s. Sat outside and read for a while until thunder drove me in. Then we had a horrendous thunder storm which lasted forever, and as I write, it’s coming back. I HATE thunder storms.
Pretty Little Lake (they call it a pond) in northern Maine

Tuesday, June 26

Left Canaan at around 11:00 this morning. Put fresh sheets on the bed and went over to the laundry to wash the dirty ones before we left. Going up Rt. 201 into Canada. The further north we got the prettier it was. Rt. 201 is called the Canadian scenic highway, and I can see why. Passed a lot of pretty little lakes, rivers, streams, and starting to see mountains. We followed Lake Wyeth for a long way. A beautiful, large lake with deep blue water against the green of the thickly forested mountains all around it. Logging is a big business here—judging by the trucks loaded with timber that passed us going the other way. Wish we could find a substitute for wood. I hate seeing all our trees getting cut down. Stopped at a rest area to take some pictures and met a Canadian couple on their way to Quebec also. But, when we got to the border crossing I thought of the gun we usually keep in the camper and asked Mike if he got it out of there before we left St. Louis. Nope, was the reply. He put it in his boot. I said you’d better declare it then. But he decided not to—and they found the gun. So, after being hauled off in cuffs and put in a holding cell, they held us there for 7 hours. I sat in the truck most of the time. They would not allow us into Canada and so we turned around and headed back into Maine. Stopped at the first campground we found and got set up for the night. Right on the Moose River. Saw a moose cow in the road on the way back. And I saw a red fox while waiting at the border crossing. Guess we have to go through the Consulate to be able to go into Canada again. The fine, by the way, was $1,500 Canadian.
