Ocean Point

Ocean Point

Pemaquid Point

Headed back to the Boothbay region this morning so we could see our favorite coastal areas at high tide. Went back to our three favorite off-the-beaten-path towns: (1) Newagen, (2) Ocean Point, and (3) East Boothbay. So pretty and not touristy. It was perfect weather-wise. Sunny and warm (well, warm for Maine anyway). Then we headed for the next peninsula—the Pemaquid area. This was even nicer and prettier than the Boothbay region. The largest town we passed through was Damariscotta which was so picturesque and very historic. The business district was only 3 blocks long. Then headed down the peninsula. This area is much more rural and hilly than the Boothbay region one peninsula over. The two peninsulas are separated by the Damariscotta River. Drove all the way down to the tip of the peninsula—Pemaquid point. There’s a lighthouse there, but it’s undergoing renovations so we couldn’t go in it. Had lunch there at a tiny little restaurant right next to the lighthose. Sat outside and ate. The shore here is beautiful and rugged. Waves hitting the rocks and spewing geysers into the air. After lunch we stopped at Fort William Henry which was built in 1692 in Pemaquid Harbor at the mouth of the Pemaquid River. Went back up the peninsula and down another little arm. The neatest town there was South Bristol which is a quaint little fishing village. After you cross the swing bridge you’re on an island. Doesn’t really seem like an island though. Some really nice homes—everything from little cottages to huge older homes to newer homes. All on the water. Left there and headed back home. Supposed to rain tonight. What a beautiful day today though.
