Sioux Fall, SD:
Left St. Joseph at 8:30 this morning. Stopped for lunch and then continued on. Just east of Sioux Falls on Interstate 90 I noticed something funny with one of the camper tires. We pulled off the interstate as soon as we could and it’s a good thing because there was a huge bulge in one of the tires. So we called RV Road Help and two hours and $162 for a new tire later we were on our way again. We were only 15 miles from where we were stopping for the night, so it wasn’t too bad. Just staying for the night—not even unhooking from the truck. Tomorrow we’ll be in Badlands National Park at the campground there. No hook-ups for 15 days.

Pony Express Rider

Headed over to the Pony Express Museum this morning. A great museum—and what a great part of our history. These riders were very young—some of them only 11 years old. The ads recruiting them said they needed someone wiry, skinny, and preferably an orphan. They took the mail from St. Joe, MO, to Sacramento, CA, in 10 days. One of the riders’ great-grandson became an astronaut. Another lived to be 105, and when he was 81 he rode a horse across the country from NYC to California. Buffalo Bill Cody was also a Pony Express rider. These guys would ride for 80 miles at a time—stopping only to change horses. After lunch we went to the Patee House Museum—an outstanding museum of the old west. The Patee house itself, which houses the museum, was a luxurious hotel opened in 1858. It housed the offices of the Pony Express, the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad, and the Civil War offices of the Provost Marshall. It’s located just up the street from the PonyExpress stables (now the museum). We also went through the Jesse James house where he was killed. I bought a book on the history of the Pony Express—my next read.

St. Joseph, MO:
Left St. Louis at 10:00 this morning and arrived at St. Joseph at 4:30—stopping once for breakfast. A pretty drive—especially from Kansas City to St. Joseph, once we got away from the city. We have always wanted to check out the Pony Express Museum here in St. Joe, so we’re staying here for a couple of nights. The Pony Express ran for less than a year, but it was such an amazing thing—delivering the mail on horseback from St. Joe to California. 92 degrees today. That’s what we’re talking about!

Wed, 4/30/08
Left Brookville at 8:15 this morning. Very chilly, but sunny. Finished the Stephen King audio book and started on "Op Center" after lunch. We stopped at Quaker Steak and Lube for lunch--a neat place which looks like an old garage and had a bunch of race car memorbilia inside. Great weather, but still cool (40s). Staying at a Holiday Inn in Hamburg, NY, tonight.

Headed out this morning on our trip to Syracuse, NY, for the GE reunion. Went to the library and signed out two audio books--"The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" by Stephen King and "Op Center" by Tom Clancy. The Stephen King book was great and reminded me of my sister-in-law, Jan, because the female character in the book was an avid Red Sox fan--as is my sister-in-law. We stayed at a Holiday Inn Express in Brookville, OH, tonight. Brookville is a neat little town--just south of Dayton, OH.

St. Louis, MO: Left W. Memphis this morning at 8:15 (at least we’re consistent). I drove first until we stopped for breakfast at about 11:00. Starving. We pulled into the Storage Banc where we store the RV at about 3:00. It was a miserable drive—rainy, windy, and cold. No leaves on the trees yet and it’s really bleak. Get me back to Florida. All in all, a good trip.

Memphis KOA; West Memphis, AR: Left Fontainebleau this morning at 8:15 and arrived at the Memphis KOA at 4:30—stopping once for breakfast. We drove through a front and the temperature dropped from 75 to 50 by the time we got to Memphis. And the Tom Sawyer RV Park which we usually stay at was flooded out, so we got into the KOA. A lot more flooding in the Memphis area than we thought. And it was raining when we rolled through Memphis. We are tired from driving all day. Plan to warm up left-overs, watch TV, and go to bed. Another early start tomorrow.
